Naomi Mairou grew up in Darwin, Australia, and has spent most of her life in the far north of the country. She currently lives in Cairns where she is fortunate to be surrounded by the subjects of her illustrations – animals of all descriptions and dramatic natural environments. She works only in traditional media – acrylic, watercolour, pen and ink. Highly detailed anthropomorphic animal characters and vivid colour are the hallmarks of her work. The first book illustrated (and written) by Naomi was ‘The Dugong Meadow’. This book won her the Children’s Book Council of Australia 2003 Crichton Award. It was also shortlisted for The Wilderness Society Environment Award for Children’s Literature. Since then she has worked on other projects (trade and educational books) both in Australia and abroad.
