I work from a home studio in Melbourne’s south, surrounded by trees and alongside an overgrown creek. I’ve been illustrating picture books and junior fiction part time for about 20 years whilst raising a family (and sundry dogs and chickens).
I’ve worked with HarperCollins, Penguin, Allen & Unwin, Black Dog Books and Little Hare and I’m new to Walker Books with a title for their Nature Storybook series ‘Cicadas’.
My picture book ‘Goodnight, Mice!’ by Frances Watts won the Prime Minister’s Literary Award for Children’s Fiction in 2012. I have three picture books currently in production, due out in 2019.
It would be hard to say whether rampant colour or pure black ink excites me more. They both give me goosebumps. And sometimes they go together, as they will with my upcoming picture book ‘Leonard Doesn’t Dance’ (again by Frances Watts).
