I work from a home studio in Melbourne’s south, surrounded by trees and alongside an overgrown creek. I’ve been illustrating picture books and junior fiction for about 20 years.
My latest books are ‘Leonard Doesn’t Dance’ by Frances Watts (HarperCollins), and ‘Searching for Cicadas’ by Lesley Gibbes (Walker Books). I’m currently working on ‘When You’re Older’ by Sofie Laguna (Allen and Unwin). My picture book ‘Goodnight, Mice!’ by Frances Watts won the Prime Minister’s Literary Award for Children’s Fiction in 2012. Illustrations for ‘Thunderstorm Dancing’ by Katrina Germein (A&U) were Highly Commended in the Illustrators Australia Awards 2015 and the book was a Notable in the CBCA awards.
It would be hard to say whether rampant colour or pure black ink thrill me more. They both give me goosebumps. And sometimes they go together as seen in ‘Leonard Doesn’t Dance’. I usually combine digital and hand made marks.
